Paper Abstract:      This paper examines using the low-threshold technology of Short Message Service (SMS) to support interactivity in the classroom. The premise of this project is as follows: students use their personal mobile phones during class to send SMS in real-time. Using the project’s artefact - a modem interfacing with customised software to produce text and spreadsheet files of SMS - the lecturer can view the messages. The lecturer can develop the interaction further with students during class, by verbally addressing the SMS content. The SMS are available in an after-class website where the lecturer and all students develop the interaction via online threaded comments.
